5 Best Team Building Activities for Work
Learning to work together efficiently as a team is crucial for any business, and has the ability to create a long-lasting, positive impact. Not only does it help us get to know one another, but simple team building activities teach us how to work together to achieve common goals and think creatively when solving problems.
A study found that companies with high employee engagement achieve twice the net annual income of organizations whose workers aren’t as engaged. Makes sense! After all, team building encourages open communication, more collaboration, it builds trust, and helps mitigate conflict.
In this article, we’re going to highlight 5 of the best corporate team building activities!
#1 Truth and Lies
Have everyone sit in a circle facing each other. Each person in the group needs to think up two facts about themselves along with one lie. The lie should be realistic and not so wacky that it’s obviously a lie. Make your way around the circle, with each person sharing their two facts and one lie (in random order). Once this is done, everyone else in the circle should call out the lie.
Truth and Lies is the perfect game to kick off with since it’s a fun icebreaker game. It helps learn more about your colleagues and enjoy some laughs.
#2 Shark Tank
Join the Shark Tank crew by pitching your own product to a mock group of investors. Break participants up into teams of 3-5 people and have them come up with a fake product to pitch to the “Shark” investors, which can be 2-4 people. Groups should pitch a product that is professional and which includes a name, business plan, marketing plan, and predicted financial data (such as profit margins and sales).
Each team will then present their pitch to the Sharks, who should be encouraged to ask questions and evaluate the product as if it were a real business. The team with the most investment wins.
Who doesn’t love the show Shark Tank? This game will bring your team together to collaborate, divvy up responsibilities, and think big.
#3 Human Knot
Get everyone to form a large circle facing each other, standing shoulder to shoulder. Each person should hold out their right hand in front of them and grab the hand of someone standing across from them. Set a timer (15-30 minutes) and instruct the group to find a way to untangle themselves without letting go of their hands. For larger groups, form several circles.
The Human Knot is a fun and simple team building activity that places an emphasis on good communication and teamwork to achieve a goal.
#4 Office Trivia
Put together a list of trivia questions about your company and workplace. These can be silly questions like “What does the poster in the break room say” and “What is the FedEx guy’s name?” or more business-y questions like “What was our biggest sale this year?”. Even better, mix it up!
Your workplace is the one guaranteed thing everyone on the team has in common. Have fun with this easy game and use it to improve team bonding.
#5 Team Emblem
Divide participants up into small teams of 3-4 people. Each team will be instructed to use paper, markers, crayons, tape, and anything else they’ll need to create a team shield or emblem. Set a time limit of 20-60 minutes to allow each team time to plan and draw an emblem that represents their team’s core values and identity.
Once this is done, invite other teams to interpret each other’s emblems. Wrap up the activity by hearing the true interpretation of each emblem by the team who created it.
The Team Emblem activity is a great way for teams to work together and foster a sense of identity for something they collectively care about.
